A Tax On Candy? Think Of The Children!

Friday, January 30th, 2009

According to Boston.com, the Massachusetts governor wants to put a tax on candy and soda. Of course, people aren’t happy about paying more…especially in the current economy. The tax would be 5 percent, added to candy and soda purchases, if the Legislature adopts the measure. A portion of the revenue from the tax would go to a new Commonwealth Wellness Fund, which would pay for public health programs intended to cut down on substance abuse and childhood obesity, among other health concerns. Steelers and Cardinals M&M’s On Sale, But Hurry!

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Just the other day, I mentioned the NFL M&M’s for sale at the M&M’s website and complained about the price. Maybe somebody over there reads my blog. OK, doubt it. But anyway, if you hurry, you can save 15% when ordering M&Ms branded with the logos of the Pittsburgh Steelers or Arizona Cardinals. Sorry I didn’t find out about this earlier because you only have through Friday, January 30th to take advantage. (more…)

Multiple Contests from Mars

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

I ran across some news on Mars and some contests they’re planning and was going to do a post on each one. But I guess I can just combine them all into one long post. The contests include a Valentine’s Day promotion with your chance to win a trip to Paris, and, with the Super Bowl coming up, another contest where you can win tickets to next year’s big game. Another Caffeinated Candy Bar

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

I don’t know if I like this trend.  Previously, we had the Snickers Charged, with caffeine, taurine, and B-vitamins.  I sorta liked it, but it looks like Mars doesn’t make it anymore.  Now we have Butterfinger Buzz from Nestle, which claims it offers as much caffeine as the leading energy drink, available (according to their web site) at participating 7-11’s and Wal Greens. Candy, Beer, Gatorade, and Hot Dogs! Yum!

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Another theft of candy story, although this time the thieves might have been more interested in the beer. Me? I’d probably go straight for the candy. A few months ago in Williamsburg, VA, according to police, theives broke into the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club’s concession stand in the middle of the night and took 80 cans of beer, 60 bottles of Gatorade, and 40 Oscar Mayer hot dogs. But for me, the big ticket item would be the 105 Snickers and Milky Way candy bars. The stand is out in the golf course and sustained about $2,000 in damages, plus the missing yummies.

A Chocolatey Christmas

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

This year, Laurie and I didn’t really do any presents for Christmas.  We started out buying each other some smaller things, then time got away from us and before we could get bigger stuff, we decided to just skip the big presents this year.  Christmas is about being with each other anyway, right? Milky Way Takes A Road Trip

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

I wish I knew about this stuff before it happens. Last summer, Mars hit the road and handed out some 285,000 Milky Way bars, trying to boost sales. (more…)

Aplets and Cotlets and Almond Roca…Who’s Gonna Win?

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

There’s quite the battle going on in the state of Washington.  Seems state Rep. Mike Armstrong is planning on introducing a bill to designate Aplets & Cotlets, manufactured in Cashmere, Washington, as Washington’s official confectionery.  According to the YakimaHerald.com Online News, Aplets are powdered-sugar-covered cubes with apple-gelatin insides infused with walnuts. Cotlets have apricot-gelatin innards. They’ve been made by Liberty Orchards in Cashmere since 1920.  Hmmm.  Sounds tasty.  So what’s the problem? (more…)

How Old Is That Candy Bar in the Window?

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Over the summer, there was a study from from Brock University and Carleton University on the age of chocolate bars found at various retailers in Canada. The study checked out over 3,000 chocolate bars from eight major retailers in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver. The results? (more…)
