Dark Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Are Out Now?

I wrote this post about Dark Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups becoming a permanent part of the Reese’s line starting in June, 2009. Imagine my surprise when Ben from Minneapolis wrote me yesterday to say:

I just saw (4/24/2009) dark chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups at the Target check out aisle! Oh my god they are amazing!

Thanks for the information, Ben!  As luck would have it, I believe the GF and I are headed out today to do some errands and we will be going right by a Target. I will be stopping in there (and other stores!) to see if I can find them here (around Pittsburgh). I checked out the Reese’s website, but nothing there about the Dark Chocolate. Which doesn’t surprise me. Often, candy websites are a little behind the times.

I don’t know if Hershey gave Target the go ahead to release the product early, if Hershey is rolling them out earlier, Target jumped the gun, or even if Ben is in some sort of test market (which seems unlikely since I already read that they are becoming a permanent addition). But I know I LOVE Dark Chocolate Reese’s and will be looking for them.  If you have them in your area, let me know by leaving a comment below.

BTW, while looking for more information about Dark Chocolate Reese’s, I found this page.  Hershey has a program called Hershey’s Fresh From The Factory where you can buy certain products at certain times and have them rushed to your house, so they are as fresh as possible.  Up right now are Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.  Order now, the product ships the week of May 18th and will be in your hands within 96 hours (as long as you pay the express shipping charges, of course).  This will let you “enjoy the undeniable Fresh From the Factory difference”.  Other “Fresh From the Factory” products include Almond Joy, Twizzlers, and Payday.  And you can sign up to be notified when those products will be available.

The individually wrapped Reese’s come in a plastic container (they look like the smaller .55 ounce cups).  $24.95 for 1 LB, 11.5 oz.  But that doesn’t include shipping.  Looks like express shipping, which will get them to you at the peak of freshness, is $16.90.  So, $41.85 total.

This is interesting.  I’ve always heard from people telling me candy directly off the factory line is incredibly better than what you buy in the store.  But here’s Hershey admitting that yes, the product you get in the store could be better.  Not that it’s Hershey’s fault.  The product gets shipped in a timely matter, I’m sure.  But it’s out of their hands once the store receives it.

UPDATE!  I did not find them at my Target, nor CVS.  But I’ll keep looking!

I just saw an ad for these (August 17, Comedy Central). Good dark chocolate is always vegan (no dairy or other animal products). I’d love to find out if this product is vegan; weirdly, there’s currently no information on this product on Hershey’s website, even though Hershey is buying TV ads for it.

Erik…I’ve found the Hershey web site to be a crap shoot. Sometimes you’ll see products I know are no longer available and sometimes you won’t see products that you know are out.

For Reese’s, try the Reese’s web site:

    http://www.hersheys.com/reeses/

It has the Dark Chocolate Reese’s, but not the ingredients. But if you go to the Hershey page on Reese’s:

    http://www.hersheys.com/products/details/reesespeanutbuttercups.asp

there is a ‘contact us’ link where you can ask Hershey about the vegan aspect of them. Good luck!

Also, I should have thought about this before. If you’re looking for the ingredients, I think it’s clear enough to seem them on my Dark Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups wrapper scan.

  4. Brett Says:

Not vegan unfortunately. I had high hopes too!

  5. Mike Says:

Thanks, Brett. I’m not even going to pretend I know what is vegan and what isn’t.

I’m lactose intolerant and used to love Reese’s peanut butter cups. Saw an ad for the dark chocolate version and looked up the ingreds right away. Disappointed. Contains milk.

I’m in absolute love with the Dark chocolate Reeses!
I always buy my halloween candy (for the trick or treaters) about a month ahead of time so I can get normal prices, And sure enough I’m in the candy aisle in Walmart, and I see a big bag of Mini Dark chocolate reeses cups!
And of course I am going to hoarde them this year :)

I was having luck at Target and K-Mart, but haven’t looked there lately. Also, check the candy aisle at Walmart…I did see the 6-packs of the Dark Reese’s there.
