Update and Rant
Didn’t realize the Candy Comments Page was so far behind. Finally found some time to update the page with some comments. And while I have you here, a slight rant.
Well, not really a rant, because it was me who was not being very smart. I was on a trip back home to NJ and always stop at Wawa because they’re the best convenience store in the world. And because sometimes I find good candy bar wrappers there. Like I did this last trip earlier this month. I found the Chew-ets Peanut Chews. My Dad’s favorite candy used to be Goldenburg’s Peanut Chews (he’s not supposed to have sweets now). Just Born, maker of Mike and Ike’s, Peeps, and more, bought out the Goldenburg company and repackaged the Goldenburg Peanut Chews as the Chew-et’s Peanut Chews. OK, everything is fine so far. Although, as a candy fan, I was sorry to hear another small candy company having to sell their business.
Side note…read Candy Freak by Steve Almond for a nice little section on the Goldenburg candy company.
So I had never gotten around to buying the Chew-et’s brand of peanut chews, and as a bonus, it was a collectible wrapper featuring Philadelphia Phillies (of whom I’m a fan) pitcher Cole Hamels. At least I think it’s the Phillies since obviously Chew-ets (or, really, Just Born) decided not to pay MLB to use the Phillies logo so it’s one of those all-logos-air-brushed-out photos of Cole. (That’s a joke…I know Cole Hamels plays for the Phillies.)
Anyway, I had them the other night and didn’t really like them. They just didn’t taste right. And now I just noticed that it says right on the package “not as good as they used to be”. Just kidding, but that would be awesome if companies did that. But seriously, they are “milk chocolatey“. Chocolatey. Fake chocolate. Chocolate flavored. It’s not chocolate. So at least I know to stay away from these in the future.

I hate to burst your bubble, but they were always mockolate. It was one of my first lessons as a kid about what real chocolate was … I still love Goldenberg’s, but as far as I can tell, the ingredients are the same as they ever were.

I like the “dark” ones far better than the “milk” version, mostly because it lets the peanut & molasses flavors take center stage.

I was afraid of that, cybele, and I figured you would know.
I also liked the ‘dark’ better and didn’t even realize I picked up the ‘milk’ version until I got back home in Pittsburgh.
Oh, well. I’m leaving the rant as is since I’m a ranty kind of person.

:O ! Amazing… fake chocolate. How on earth could they do that! How disrespectful.
