Laurie and I go to Niagara Falls, Canada

(Updated 8-18-02)

Laurie and I took a trip to Niagara Falls in September of 2001. We decided we wanted to go away for about a week, go someplace we haven't been to together, and someplace that wasn't expensive. Niagara Falls fit the bill, especially since we stayed on the Canada side. With the difference in the American and Canadian currency, we had a good time and didn't spend a lot of money. We used credit cards for most things since we heard that they offer the best exchange rates. And we exchanged some currency at a bank. We had to pay a small surcharge, but the rate was a lot better then those places around town that offered to do it. We drove up from Pittsburgh, ran into a little traffic, and got kinda lost once. But we got there and made it to the Holiday Inn. First day there, we unpacked and walked down to the Falls for a quick peek. Then, the first mistake of the vacation. Hungry, but not knowing where to go, we spotted a Denny's right on the corner of the Holiday Inn. We went there and it was EXPENSIVE!!! I don't know why it was so expensive, but simple sandwich entrees were going for more than $10 American. Outragous. That was the first and last time we ate there! Not that we drove all the way to Niagara Falls to eat at a Denny's.

Our plan was to spend Monday around Niagara Falls, Tuesday we would drive up to Toronto (about an hour away) to see the CN Tower and the Hockey Hall Of Fame. Wednesday and Thursday would be spent on the American side of the Falls and doing any other sites we missed. Also, we needed to go to the Casino Niagara at least once. Monday was great. Tuesday, not so great. Tuesday was September 11th. 9/11. That 911. It was a strange feeling being in Canada while everything was going on. For my thoughts on what it was like, plus a few pictures, click here. With the events of 911, our Toronto trip was delayed. I didn't even feel like going back, but Laurie insisted we do. She knew how much I was looking forward to seeing the Hockey Hall Of Fame and she knew I would regret getting this far and not going. So we went on our last day of vacation. See the link below for all of our Toronto pictures and what we did.

We had a great time at Niagara Falls. With the exchange rate, it was really worth it to stay on the Canadian side. There's a few links here and there among the photos, and if you would like more information about Niagara Falls, try the Niagara Falls Tourist Information Guide Website or the Niagara Region's Official Tourism Information Website. The photos have been broken down into sections...some sections may be a little slow to load. Laurie and I ended up taking over 100 pictures!! No, they're not ALL on the website!
